Day 0, Dec 7 - The Flight, SQ26

by bryan on Dec.18, 2007, under Happenings, Winter Wonderland 2007

First, forgive me if I mis-spell stuff here. I don’t really like blogging about happenings, so I don’t cross-check my spelling, but spell based on the phonetics of the word (especially German words)

We made it really early to the airport. Since my sister and Ben were flying off that very evening to Australia, we all packed into dad’s car to go to the airport. I was rather disappointed that I could not check-in because my flight was booked through Chan Brothers, but was delighted, nevertheless, that I was going on vacation. After surviving massive jams on the road, we finally reached terminal 2 at 8PM. We did our check-in and went off to the Soup Restaurant to have dinner. We decided to go in early, and soon after, I realised I had not notified MINDEF of my vacation. MINDEF’s phone notification service’s voice recognition system sucks! I kept saying Austria and it kept interpreting it as Australia. So, anyway, that done, we went on to the boarding gates. We saw the long queue waiting to get past the security checks, so we decided that since we already had a place on board the plane, we’d wait until everyone went through before we did. We waited….and waited…..and waited…finally, after slightly more than an hour, the end of the queue was imminent. We joined it and soon were past security. No sooner were our checks complete when the PA system came to life. Our plane was experiencing some technical difficulties which could not be resolved. Singapore Airlines would have to find another plane. So, all that time going through the security checks were wasted. We had to move to another boarding gate. The worst thing was that they couldn’t give us a new, fixed time for departure. So we queued again to be checked again, and again, we got through. Singapore Airlines has to be given credit - they provided hot snacks and drinks to all affected passengers. While there was this irritating family who kept rushing for the food (you should’ve seen them and their kids..it was like they had never eaten for a long time). They piled their plates while others had none. It was a sad and utterly disappointing moment to be a Singaporean. Anyway, about 2 hours after our original departure time, we were on the plane, and off the Frankfurt, Germany! I couldn’t sleep much, though I did manage to get some shuteye. The same family who were rushing for the food ended up sitting in front of me..and suffice to say, I really hope after I graduate I can land myself a job overseas so that I can escape such inconsiderate, idiotic people. The flight was an extremely smooth one, with little turbulence. 12 hours or so later, we landed in Frankfurt and got out at terminal 1.
